Vegan Cheese At Pizza Hut Nationwide!

There’s something new happening in the fast-food world. After years of serving customers a heavy diet of meat and cheese, companies have started offering plant-based alternatives. Earlier this year McDonald’s rolled out a McVegan in Finland, in addition to their McVeggie in Norway and Le Grande Veggie in France. Taco Bell now offers over 27 different vegan combinations on its menus across the globe. These times they are a changin’.

Pizza Hut Restaurants is the latest empire to get in on the act.

After numerous requests from customers to add a non-dairy cheese to their menu, the UK arm of the company rolled out a test in a handful of stores throughout England. After a strong response from customers, the company announced they will be putting a vegan cheese option on menus nationwide by the end of the week.

‘After an amazing customer response to our vegan cheese trial earlier this year, we’re pleased to announce

that the dairy-free alternative will now be served in all of our restaurants nationwide and feature as a permanent fixture on our menus,’ Pizza Hut Restaurant’s head of communications, Gareth Hopley, said in a statement.

Gareth Hopley, Pizza Hut Restaurant’s head of communications, stated that veganism is on the rise, with research by the Vegan Society reporting that that the UK has seen a 350% increase in the last decade. Apparently, PHR spent the better part of the past year looking for the right cheese alternative for the menu. According to Gareth, they didn’t want to launch something that didn’t have the right flavor profile. They ultimately decided  cheese from Violife, a Greek-based producer that touts the fact that the cheese is not only vegan but also free from preservatives and GMOs. Customers will have the option of adding the Violife cheese for an extra £1.

This decision by Pizza Hut is huge

because it will not only give vegans another option when craving something savoury, but will also be celebrated by those who are lactose-intolerant. It’s also great news for health-conscious consumers who are concerned about the link between diary and cardiovascular disease.

Given the rise of plant-based diets and the wave of people reducing their intake of animal products, it’s not a stretch to assume this decision will spread to the USA and other global markets before long. It’s a win-win for the company and consumers. What’s not to love?
